Ogbe Iwori: The Untold Story of the Oyo Kings
In Yoruba tradition, a king does not rule alone. The crown carries an obligation to consult, and the Odu records what happened when that obligation was honoured and when it was not. Ogbe Iwori is the Odu of the deep seer, and its appearance in the affairs of state concerns the quality of counsel a ruler is willing to receive.
The story speaks to a wider truth that applies to anyone holding authority, however small. Power that refuses guidance becomes isolated, and isolation is the first stage of a fall. Ogbe Iwori asks the querent to examine whose counsel they are actually taking, and whether they are listening or merely being told what they wish to hear.
